ALthough working with the restless dead is a magical tradition that goes back to the Greek Magical Papyri, practitioners from many traditions are cautioned not to petition spirits associated with this compelling image without very good reason. In Latin American folk catholicism she is known as the Anima Sola, the lonely soul in purgatory reaching up to offer her assistance. Because she died for unrequited love, she is prayed to to heal suffering hearts, but it is said that she will only make the object of love return the petitioner's affections in exchange for trading places with her in the flames when they die. In Haitian Vodou, many houses use her as an image for Marinette, a Vodou manbo (priestess) who is said to have played a key role in the ceremony that began the revolution. She is considered a very "hot" and vengeful spirit and therefore only the well initiated should work with her.
