Anacoana was a legendary Taino cacica (chief), zemi priestess, and poet who lived in what is now Haiti during Spanish colonization of the Antilles. She is remembered as an intelligent, kind, and cultured leader. The spiritual practices of her people live on in Vodou and other Caribbean practices, having combined with those of enslaved priests of African religions during the early colonial period.
