Joan of Arc's story is well known. She received visions of saints and angels that told her to fight on the side of France against England. Dressed in men's battle armor, she led French troops in several battles, until she was handed over to the English and tried, convicted, and burned by the church as a witch. The church later reversed the conviction and she is now revered as a saint. Because of her transgression of gender norms, she is often seen as a patron of trans and gender noncomforming people. In Haitian Vodou, her image is sometimes used to represent Marinette, a manbo (priestess) who played a key role in the Haitian revolution.
