Moses is known for having led the Israelites out of Egypt, for having a magical battle with the Pharaoh, for witnessing The Great I Am in the burning bush, and for receiving the commandments on Mount Sinai. He created a brazen serpent to heal his people from snakebites, made water issue from a stone, and parted the Red Sea. He was a magician par excellence, with a direct line of communication to God, and for that reason (and his association with serpents) is syncretized with the great white sky serpent lwa (spirit) Danballah in Haitian Vodou. In Vodou lore, because Moses was married to Sephorah, an Ethiopian woman whose father Jethro was a priest of African religion, there is a direct lineage through the Judeo-Christian tradition that links back to the African. Although Danballah is generally associated with the imaj (image) of Moses with the brazen serpent, the water and the white garment in this image serves to link it with the appropriate spirit.
