Rachel's Story
Rachel is a bit of a Scully to Nixie’s Mulder when it comes to the esoteric arts; she appreciates the power of symbolism and moving of energies, and she is always looking to learn more. She discovered both the tarot and Edward Gorey at age 12, steering her towards a life filled with books, macabre art, and exploration of the psyche through the arts. As an 80s teen goth punk, Rachel was drawn to ouija boards, and Wicca, and spent many an afternoon browsing at the Occult Emporium in Allentown, Pennsylvania and later at Harry’s Occult Shop in Philadelphia. As an atheist, daily meditator, and yoga practitioner for the past 25 years, Rachel understands the transformative power of a spiritual practice, regardless of belief.
Rachel graduated from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a degree in Illustration and Metals (the university sadly closed its doors permanently and unexpectedly in summer 2024). She then went on to work at the famed Mütter Museum, a 19th century medical museum, where interest in the human body, life, death and healing grew exponentially. During this time she began tattooing and when she was laid off from the museum she decided to pack up all of her books and move west to try tattooing in Austin. In the early to mid nineties there were only a couple of women tattooing in Austin. Rachel worked hard and became one of the best tattooers in town, leading the way for countless artists who call Austin home. Rachel knows from experience how much a beautiful tattoo can change your life.
